Packing Density and Fermentation Quality of Short-Cut Silage

The key to silage quality is fast packing and sealing. Short-cut material packs 15% to 20% denser than long-cut thanks to short chop and good flowability.

Higher packing density means less residual oxygen, fuller lactic acid fermentation, a faster and more stable pH drop, and significantly lower risk of butyric acid and mycotoxins.

At the same time, short-cut ensures more thorough kernel processing, greatly improving starch digestibility of maize silage.
